Smart Home Energy Automation | Jousto
Smart home energy automation • Jousto EMS Layer 3 (AmpAura)

Automation that hunts cheap energy — and avoids the spikes

Jousto’s advanced automation (Layer 3) connects price signals to real actions: EV charging, HVAC, heat pumps, hot water, solar and batteries. The goal is simple: use more when power is cheap, store what you can, and reduce exposure when the market turns.

How we deliver this: At launch, Jousto EMS (including Layer 3 automation) is included with Jousto solar/battery projects (solar-only or battery-only where applicable). We’re not offering EMS as a standalone product yet.

A clear walkthrough of AmpAura + Jousto EMS Layer 3 — and what it changes for homes and SMEs.

Why automation matters

When the grid is flooded, prices can go negative

In high-solar regions, daytime supply can exceed demand. That’s when the market gets weird: prices can dive and the value of exporting solar can drop sharply. Automation helps you respond instead of guessing.

Why energy prices can go negative
Negative prices usually happen when supply overwhelms demand — especially around midday on sunny days.
Principle 1

Use it first, store it second, export last

Jousto’s ethos is to maximise the value of your solar locally. That means routing surplus into useful loads and storage before “dumping it” to the grid.

Solar-first hierarchy: use, store, then export
Most households and SMEs win by increasing self-consumption before chasing market spikes.

What we automate first

  • Heat pumps & hot water: heat when solar is abundant or power is cheap.
  • EV charging: charge in low-cost windows and optionally track export surplus.
  • Batteries: charge/discharge based on tariff windows and price signals.
  • HVAC: pre-cool / pre-warm when it’s cheap so comfort stays stable later.
Result: less waste, lower bills, and fewer nasty surprises when the market turns.
Principle 2

Precision load control (without sacrificing comfort)

Automation isn’t “all off / all on.” The best savings come from small decisions at the right moments: pausing a load briefly, adjusting a setpoint, or shifting a schedule — especially during short spikes.

Precision control of energy loads
Think “surgical” control: reduce exposure to peak prices while maintaining comfort and uptime.
Principle 3

Edge-to-cloud resilience: automation keeps running

Good automation doesn’t rely on perfect internet. The Jousto approach combines local logic (fast response) with cloud intelligence (analysis and optimisation), so the system stays useful day to day.

Local control + cloud optimisation: fast response, better learning, and robust operation.
Edge resilience — local control continues
If connectivity drops, essential automation rules can continue locally (site dependent).
For homes & SMEs

Clear reporting — savings you can explain

Whether you’re a homeowner or an SME, you need reporting that makes sense: what ran, when it ran, and what it achieved — without spreadsheets.

SME energy reporting
Boardroom-ready summaries: performance, savings, exceptions, and opportunities.

Homes

More self-consumption, lower bills, and automation that keeps comfort stable while reducing exposure to peak windows.

SMEs

Operational control + visibility: scheduling, demand trimming, and reporting you can use in budgeting and decision-making.

What we automate

Use cases (Layer 3 builds on Layer 1 + 2)

Layer 3 automation works best when the fundamentals are right: solid metering, a sensible tariff, and systems sized to your goals. Then automation turns your assets into a coordinated system.

Jousto automation use case tiles

EV charging

Charge in low-cost windows, track export surplus, and reduce charging rate during spikes.

HVAC + comfort

Pre-cool / pre-warm at the right time so comfort stays high while costs stay low.

Solar + batteries

Prioritise self-consumption, store surplus, and respond intelligently to market conditions.
