Hidden Costs of Air Conditioning Installation

The Sticker Price Isn't the Full Price

Air conditioning quotes are almost always based on a standard installation. Many sites aren't standard. The gap between the quoted price and the final invoice can range from $300 to $3,000+, depending on your home's access, electrical setup, and environment.

Internal Wall Pipe Drop

When the indoor unit can't be mounted directly against an external wall — common in brick veneer homes, period homes, and apartments — the refrigerant lines need to drop inside the wall cavity before exiting. More labour-intensive than a straight-through penetration.

Additional cost: $300–$800 per run.

Extended Pipe Run

Standard quotes assume the outdoor unit is within a set distance (typically 5m). If your outdoor unit is further away — around the side of the building, up one level, or across a rooftop — additional piping and labour is required.

Additional cost: $300–$800 per additional run.

Coastal and Corrosive Environment Costs

Homes within 1km of the ocean are at risk of accelerated coil corrosion. A Blue Fin coating or equivalent treatment on the outdoor unit coil extends system life and protects your warranty.

Additional cost: $200–$600.

Outdoor Unit Placement

Outdoor units need a stable, level surface. If compacted ground isn't available — on a deck, paved courtyard, or balcony — a concrete slab pad or wall bracket is required.

Concrete slab pad: ~$270. Wall bracket: variable.

Electrical Upgrades and Compliance Certificates

Older homes may have switchboards that can't support an additional air conditioning circuit. An upgrade is required before installation can proceed.

Switchboard upgrade: $800–$2,500 depending on the existing board and number of new circuits.

In Victoria, every installation requires a Certificate of Electrical Safety (ESV) and a VBA Plumbing Compliance Certificate for jobs over $750. These should always be included in your quote — ask explicitly.

Multi-Storey Access and Scaffolding

When the outdoor unit must be installed at height, scaffolding may be required.

Scaffolding: typically $500–$2,000+ depending on height and duration.

Ongoing Costs to Budget For

  • Annual servicing: $150–$300 per unit.
  • Filter cleaning: Every 2–4 weeks during heavy use — DIY, but important for efficiency and warranty.
  • Electricity: A 5kW split running 8 hours/day in summer adds roughly $150–$300/year at typical Australian tariffs.
